The Super Mario Bros. Movie Earns 12.8 Billion Yen in Japan



The Super Mario Bros. Movie has achieved a cumulative total of 12.8 billion yen (approximately US$90.5 million) and has sold 8.98 million tickets in Japan as of Monday, marking its 11th weekend at the Japanese box office where it dropped from #4 to #5.

The movie premiered in Japan on April 28, raking in 1.276 million tickets sold and earning 1.843 billion yen (around US$13.54 million) within its first three days.

By June 2, the film secured the #5 spot as the highest-grossing overseas animated film in Japan. Furthermore, it currently holds the #18 position among all animated films (including anime) and stands as the 27th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan.

In terms of worldwide success, the film ranks as the #3 all-time highest-earning animated film if Disney's 2019 CG film The Lion King is considered animated, or #2 if not.

On April 5, the film premiered in the United States and in over 60 markets worldwide. Its worldwide earnings have now reached an impressive sum of US$1,341,486,300.

Notably, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2023 on a global scale, solidifying its place as the highest-earning video game adaptation in history.

The film was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. Leading the English voice cast are Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi, respectively, while Anya Taylor-Joy portrays Princess Peach. Jack Black lends his voice to Bowser.

The talented cast also includes Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Additionally, Charles Martinet, renowned for his voice work in Nintendo games, provides "surprise cameos" in the film.
